Stand Firm

Stand Firm

Stand Firm!

How can Christians “stand firm” against the enemy? Paul instructs Christians they need to:

  1. See the enemy. (6:12)
  2. Suit up. (6:14-17)
  3. Stand firm (6:10, 11, 13, 18-20)

1. See the enemy.  Let Christians of 2017 not be deceived; we too are in a spiritual battle with the evil one, just as Christians were in the first century when the Apostle Paul wrote Ephesians 6:10-20

There is a reluctance of many Christians in the West to acknowledge the existence of, much less the powers of Satan. And yet Paul makes plain that Satan is indeed our scheming and wicked enemy;

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Eph 6:12

Christians need to recognise that spiritual warfare is real and that the Devil is real, and he is a shrewd and vicious enemy, today, as he was in the first century. So, what must Christians of every age do?

2. Suit up- Put on the full armour of God

When Christians recognise that our enemy is not another person, but the spiritual forces of evil, we will suit up in the appropriate spiritual armour.

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Eph 6:11

3. Stand firm.

How Christians can stand firm in an antagonistic world? It is only by putting on the full armour that God had provided, that is, the powerful truth of the gospel of the Lord Jesus, that Christians will be able to stand their ground against the attacks of Satan.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Eph 6:13

Disciples of Jesus also have prayer available to them = our “secret weapon” against Satan and his attacks. Let us, as Paul commands,

  be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (Eph 6:18)
