Washing Feet

Washing Feet

The night before Jesus is crucified, he admits that his soul is “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). And yet, it’s at this time and in this state that he gets on his knees and washes his disciples’ feet, including Peter, the one who would deny him, and Judas, the one who would betray him. It’s scandalous!

So, why is Jesus stooping so low? Well, Jesus says, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me”. But, Jesus at this point is alluding to his death on the cross, where his death washes away our sin.

If you want to know God personally, and for all eternity, then your sins need to be washed away, and this is only possible through Jesus’ great act of humility on the cross.

Those who have put their trust in Jesus’ great act of humility, cannot help but imitate him. As difficult as it is, true Christians seek to love others with Jesus-like humility, because they are so in awe of the salvation they’ve received through Jesus’ humility.
