Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night. What would Jesus say to this morally respectable, distinguished teacher of Israel that would prove to be so confronting and yet so enlightening?
Nicodemus is respectful but deeply confused. Jesus said “to understand who I am you must be born again”.
He can only think in physical terms about returning to his mother’s womb.
Jesus speaks further to Nicodemus
Jesus speaks to Nicodemus of things he should have known. Jesus’ calls everyone – Nicodemus included – to new birth by water and the Spirit (see Ezk 36 and 37). Only through this new birth can anyone enter God’s Kingdom.
